Þórdísarholt (Þórdís’s Wood)

On the way to Vatnsdalur, Ingimundur’s wife Vigdís gave birth to their daughter, Þórdís.

More: In the spring, having spent a winter at Ingimundarhóll in Víðidalur, Ingimundur the Aged travelled to Vatnsdalur with his household. “And when they reached the Vatnsdalsá river, Vigdís, Ingimundur’s wife, said: ‘I must stay here for a while, for my labour is beginning.’

Ingimundur replied: ‘May it go well.’ Then Vigdís gave birth to a baby girl. She was named Þórdís. Ingimundur said: ‘This place shall be called Þórdís’s Wood.’”

At the Þórdísarlund forestry plantation in Vatnsdalur a heritage sign commemorates the birth of Þórdís, the first native of the Húnavatnssýsla region. Þórdísarlækur (Þórdís’s Brook) flows out into the bay here, and Þórdís’s Wood is probably nearby.
