Hof (Temple)

Ingimundur settled the whole of the Vatnsdalur valley above the Helgavatn and Urðarvatn lakes, and called his home Hof.

More: Ingimundur the Aged settled the whole of the Vatnsdalur valley above the Helgavatn and Urðarvatn lakes, “and chose a place to live in a very beautiful hollow and gathered materials for his farmhouse. He built a great temple a hundred feet long, and when he dug holes for his high-seat pillars he found the object that had been prophesied for him. Then Ingimundur said: ‘It is true, after all, that we cannot challenge fate. Let us see this in a positive light. This farmstead shall be called Hof [Temple].’”

Above the farmhouse of Hof is Goðhóll (Gods’ Hill), believed to be the site of Ingimundur’s temple. No description of the temple exists, and no excavations have been made. Traces of a “temple enclosure” on Goðhóll have been a listed heritage site since 1930. A heritage sign is located by the road above Hof.
