Friðmundarárgil (Friðmundará gorge)
Jökull ambushed Þórólfur heljarskinn (“Dark-skinned”) at the fortifications he had built at Friðmundarárgil (Friðmundará gorge).
More: Þórólfur heljarskinn (“Dark-skinned”), who settled in Forsæludalur, was a troublemaker. He built himself a fortification at the Friðmundará river, which is believed to have been on a rocky outcrop between the Friðmundará and Vatnsdalsá rivers. Þórólfur was suspected of making human and animal sacrifice, and was unpopular. Local men wanted him out of the district, and came to Þorsteinn, who attacked Þórólfur with 19 men. But the fortifications were hard to overcome. Jökull went up by the river and past the fort. He had an axe, which he hooked over the rampart and hauled himself up by the shaft, and got into the fortification. Þórólfur fled, pursued by Jökull, who killed him at nearby Grátsmýri marsh.
