Gróustaðir (Gróa’s Place)

Gróa lived at Gróustaðir (Gróa’s Place). She had magical powers, and called down a landslide which destroyed the farmhouse, killing all those inside.

More: The sisters Þórey and Gróa arrived in Hrútafjörður by ship. They spent the winter at Hof with Þorsteinn, son of Ingimundur. Þórey settled at Þóreyjarnúpur, and Gróa near Þorsteinn, at Gróustaðir (Gróa’s Place). She was said to have magical powers. Gróa held a feast, to which she invited the sons of Ingimundur and other leading people of the region. In a dream. Þorsteinn was warned against attending, and he was prevented from going by a pain in his eye. “When the sun had set, Gróa’s shepherd saw that she came out and walked widdershins around the house, and said: ‘It will be hard to resist the luck of the sons of Ingimundur.’ She looked up at the mountain and waved a kerchief of cloth, in which she had tied up much gold, and spoke: ‘Let what is fated come to pass.’ Then she went inside and closed the door. A landslide fell on the farmhouse, and all inside died.” The place has been said to be haunted ever since.

The placename Gróustaðir still exists, but the farm has long been abandoned. Nearby is

Gróustaðaskriða (Gróustaðir Scree).
