Jökulsstaðir (Jökull’s Place)
Jökull, son of Ingimundur, lived at Jökulsstaðir (Jökull’s Place). On his father’s death he inherited his sword Ættartangi.
More: Ingimundur’s son Jökull is described as rather big, with sharp eyes; few were his match, and he was a great warrior; he was a formidable man in size and strength. He was taciturn, harsh, unruly, stubborn and tough, with a volatile temper. He was a faithful friend, who took the lead in all the disputes in which he and his brothers were involved.
Jökull inherited the sword Ættartangi on his father’s death.
According to the Book of Settlements and the Saga of the Vatnsdalur People, Jökull lived at Tunga. They do not mention Jökulsstaðir. The saga states that a certain Þórormur lived at “lower” Tunga, so presumably Jökull lived at “upper” Tunga. South of the farmhouse at Þórormstunga, and above it, is the site of an ancient farmstead, which is called Jökulsstaðir. A heritage sign has been erected by the road below Jökulsstaðir, which is a short walk up the hillside. The place is not known to have been inhabited after the time of the saga. Jökulsstaðir is a listed heritage site.
