More: Þórólfur sleggja (Sledgehammer”) was a rowdy man and a thief who kept twenty big, black, ferocious cats. Urged on by local people, Þorsteinn and his brothers and a certain Norwegian ambushed him at home at Sleggjustaðir (Sleggja’s Place). Þórólfur cast a spell to enrage the cats, and the brothers set the house on fire. “Þórólfur ran out with two chests full of silver, through the smoke. When he emerged the Norwegian was waiting for him, and said: ‘Here comes the enemy, and looks evil.’ The Norwegian ran after him down to the Vatnsdalsá river. Þórólfur came to a place with deep quagmires. Þórólfur turned to face him and grabbed him, shoved him under his arm and said: ‘If you want a race, let’s go together,’ and ran out into the bog, where both sank, and never surfaced again.” According to the Saga of the Vatnsdalur People, Sleggjustaðir is said to be “down from Helgavatn lake,” but its precise location is not known.
