Stígandahróf (Stígandi’s boathouse)

Ingimundur was given the longship Stígandi by King Harald Fairhair of Norway. He built a boathouse for it, named Stígandahróf.

More: During a cold winter, Ingimundur’s men found a female polar bear with two cubs on the ice of a frozen lake. Ingimundur named the lake Húnavatn (Bear-Cub Lake). In the spring he sailed to Norway to fetch timber for building, and took with him the bears, which he presented to King Harald. Ingimundur received many gifts from the king, and for his journey home the ship Stígandi (High Stepper), which was said to “be the best of all ships for sailing upwind, and swifter than any other.” He sailed the vessel into Húnavatn lake, and built a boathouse, Stígandahróf. At the west of the lake, a little north of the farmstead of Þingeyrar, is the site of a rather large boathouse, 10 fathoms long and 5 wide. Stígandahróf has been a listed heritage site since 1930.
